<image:caption>…small, imported Japanese pickups from the likes of Toyota, Mazda and Datsun weren’t taken all that seriously when it came to outright capability when compared to American trucks. However, their light and trusty nature found many takers and before long, they earned themselves a place among buyers even in the North American market with the now famous, chicken tax.</image:caption>

While Toyota edged out on Datsun with 4x4 hardware, later Datsun 4x4s featured a higher degree of internal comfort with independent front suspension. To counter the rev-happy Datsun motors, Toyota introduced the now-renowned 22R engine which solidified Toyota’s trusty image across multiple model lineups and was also turbocharged later to take on Nissan 6-pots. More importantly as some might argue, the introduction of the under-stressed cast-iron L-series diesel mills was what truly cemented Hilux’s credentials out in the bog despite their rather unhurried acceleration out on the black-top.</image:caption>

In a rare occurrence, the US & Canadian also got a taste of turbo-diesels in small pickups with the 2L-T. The acclaimed 4Runners made their way into markets with the type being sold as the Hilux Surf in Japan. It became a pop-culture icon starring in Michael J. Fox’s 1985 hit “Back to the future”.</image:caption>

The robust atmospheric L-series motors such as the 2L and 3L remained the staple oil-burners of the lineup with the 5L introduced later, & alongside its electronically-injected avatar 5L-E, offered considerable load-lugging ability. Mind you, the 2L-TE diesels gained an un-Toyota like reputation for not lasting long & were aptly replaced by the more potent 1KZ-TE turbo-diesel which largely addressed the lack of high-speed on-road competency among diesel-powered Hilux variants. As the last global light pickup sold in US & Canadian markets, the type was upgraded with dual-wishbone front-end for 4WD dual-cab setups.</image:caption>

<image:caption>….2L-powered Hilux famously survived falls, waves and fire among other things on the motoring show and Toyota UK didn’t waste the opportunity and introduced the “Invincible” trim on the sixth-gen Hilux. The common-rail direct-injected D-4D KD-series turbo-diesels now meant the oil-burners could now overtake confidently with heavier trailers at speed out on bitumen. They featured a 32-bit ECU and a variable-nozzle turbocharger (VNT) paired with DOHC 16-valve design, a first for the Hilux. Petrols were further bolstered by the powerful 3.4-litre 5VZ-FE V6 four-cam in addition to the existing cast-iron RZ-series 4-cylinders known for their toughness.</image:caption>

These primarily used Hilux running gear with their own platforms and only recently, the TNGA-F architecture. Mind you, these may be soft-core only by larger Land Cruiser standards, they’re still very capable machines and of course, immensely popular. <image:caption>Seen by many as the peak Land Cruiser station-wagon, the 100-series Land Cruiser sold as the Amazon in certain parts of the world was a step-up in interior comfort and tech from the J80 with its advanced AHC and Skyhook systems. The type had independent front suspension and for the first time, offered V8 power to the Land Cruiser driver. A simpler version of the J100 with J80 running gear was also sold as the 105-series in many markets in the Oceania, Middle-East and Africa. The 100-series standardised electronically-controlled precision fuelling for both the diesel and petrol engines with an intercooler for the oiler and Variable Valve Timing (VVT-i) on the intake side for the DOHC 2UZ gas-guzzler.</image:caption>

A 90-degree 4.5-litre DOHC, direct common-rail injected, 32-valved, intercooled V8 hunk of an oil burner that delivered an earth-moving 650nm of torque just above tick-over. Forget payloads, this engine shrugs off 3.5 tonnes of trailers on gradients and yet it’s under-stressed. As any old Aussie “prick” will tell you, a simple ECU re-flash will unlock upwards of 850nm. Such over-engineering also made it ideal for harsh, abusive conditions despite advancements as it became the miner’s preferred down under in the J70.</image:caption>

The only iron-block member of the fabled UZ-family of V8s, the 2UZ-FE has now achieved an almost-mythical status among petrol engines with multiple examples crossing a million miles without overhauls. The UR-series may not have the same following as the UZ in Toyota circles but both the 4.6 1UR-FE and the power-packed 5.7 3UR-FE are consistent smooth operators in their own right.</image:caption>

The type was also available as a manual with the VD-series V8 or a GR-series V6 in select markets with basic trims. Wizardry such as Toyota’s KDSS, DAC, Crawl Control gave the 200 unparalleled ability leaving very little it couldn’t do on or off-road. We’ll include the HZ & the HD-series as well just because why shouldn’t we? These engines gained an enviable reputation for toughness in the rough and tumble world of mining and conflicts. 12H-T introduced direct-injection turbocharging, the HD-series then introduced 4 valves/cyl. and later electronic fuelling. However, the most legendary of them all is arguably the 1HZ, an ECU-less, mechanically-injected, 12-valved normally-aspirated toiler of an iron block which serves primarily in aid-spec J70s to this date being in service since 1990.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blogs - Stalwart friend - The formidable F-series….</image:title>
<image:caption>….normally-aspirated straight-six petrol engines defined the Land Cruiser for over half a century. A burly bottom-end, smooth-spinning nature and a general disregard for fuel quality characterised these F and FZ-series engines. Stupendously easy to mend modular block designs made it a hit among those wanted a refined, fuss-free duty engine with enough power to uproot a stump. Even when loaded, these engines performed better than early diesels. Fuel consumption is best when ignored entirely altogether but Land Rover had to cram in a V8 just to match their muscle. Mind you, early marks derived heavily from the Chevrolet Stovebolt-six of the 1930s.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blogs - Stalwart friend - Offered…</image:title>
<image:caption>….with at least 6 petrol and 17 diesel engines throughout it’s 4-decade long run, the J70 remains the de-facto choice for people working on the fringes of civilisation. Where paved roads and running water become luxuries, the 70-series Land Cruiser marches on. Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings sell most of these J70s to humanitarian-agencies and governments. A white Toyota is a sign above all, in the most inhospitable parts of the world, of better things to come. It’s perhaps the most noble role played by any motor car today.</image:caption>

<image:caption>….so why reinvent it, let’s build on it. It seems we had the basics worked out post-war. The right simple motoring formula emerging from times of crisis. The 2CV could drive through ploughed fields without breaking a basket of eggs onboard, all while giving one enough room to wear a tall hat & it had detachable rear seats. The Mini cleverly accommodated six-footers despite its diminutive size due to clever packaging and was a hoot to drive as well. The Beetle was endlessly reliable. The Fiat 500 was and still is the Gucci purse of automobiles. Meanwhile the Renault 4 had open top adaptations without doors and 4-wheel drive like the 2CV, although the Citroen Sahara is cooler since it used 2 engines, so it was an AWD, an FWD & an RWD.</image:caption>

Simply put, a small 1200-kilo car doesn’t need big brakes or electronic nannies to be kept in check & VTEC makes it fly as well. With 50+ imperial MPG, you got diesel levels of economy without penalising refinement topped off with a performance boost if you didn’t mind keeping the 4-pots buzzing away.</image:caption>

The sheer will it takes to be disruptive in a market so conservative and a segment still emerging is in and of itself an executive case study. Mind you, these cars are about as big (‘cuz American & cheaper than..) as a 2026 Honda Civic while being way more exciting. In 1963, $2700 ($30k today) bought you a loaded Corvair Monza Spyder with a drop top and turbocharged rear-mounted flat-six like in a 911 Porsche.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Manufacturers to their credit, even in the cost-sensitive Indian market, didn’t hesitate bringing along their global models. These models seemed to carve out a niche for themselves as the large-hearted Fiats and later the turbo Abarth models made a name for themselves despite living largely under the shadows of the VW Polo in the small but alive performance-hatch market. Meanwhile, Honda Jazz moved goalposts for outright practicality and brought premium appeal to hatchback space.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Honda’s upcoming “0 Series” platform marked a clean-sheet rethink with ultra-lightweight architecture & next-gen EnE architectures with electric powertrains in mind. However, amidst falling EV demand Honda has abandoned this project in favour of further ICE development. The global trend away from BEVs may see Honda playing to its core strengths.</image:caption>
